December 08, 2009 22:01 PM

PETALING JAYA, Dec 8 (Bernama) -- The Spas and wellness industry which is now mushrooming in the country has a big potential to develop as well as become a new attraction in the tourism industry, said Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen.

She said according to a survey done in 2007 by Intelligent Spas, the number of spas in Malaysia had grown over 200 per cent since 2002 and currently, there were 170 spas operating with a small one capable of earning an average of RM1,000 per day in sales and conference guests.

She noted that the combination of ancient Eastern therapeutic traditions with modern innovations within the spa services in the country contributed to the development of the industry.

"I am glad to note that our spas are among the country's most popular tourist attractions and many travel agencies specialise in spa tours for visitors seeking the ultimate relaxing and rejuvenating experience," she said at the opening of The Spa and Med Beauty in Subang, near here.
