RM25m marina in Malacca set for completion soon

By MARTIN CARVALHO

MALACCA: The state’s RM25mil marina is expected to attract yachts and other sailboats from around the world when it is fully operational by June this year.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said that work on the 40-berth marina in Kota Laksamana next to the Eye On Malaysia was due for completion by May 5.

“At present, the yachts dock at Langkawi and Port Klang.

“However, I have been informed that many of them, including those from Singapore, are waiting to sail to Malacca,” he told reporters after visiting the project site recently.

He said the state had a variety of attractions for sailors including shopping, food, culture, entertainment and historical tours.

The marina, located on a 2ha site at the mouth of Malacca River, would be operational by June, with expansion work to be carried out later, he said.

“We will invite private investors to open a restaurant and a boat-repair workshop at the marina,” he added.

Efforts to promote the marina would be carried out by Malacca Sail Boat Club and local marine expert Boat Explorer, with Malacca Governor Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob appointed as adviser, he said.

Earlier, Mohd Ali visited the fishermen’s jetty at Duyong River.

He said that work to clear river silt would be completed by June and the river deepened within the next six months.
