Scene in Melaka never fails to fascinate me ever since I was a kid and 40 years forward, other then the developments, the glorious food, people, culture, tourist sites had always been something which stays attached to me.
When the development of Padang Pahlawan (Padang Merdeka) was announced, the Melaka folks had reservations over the future of their favorite evening playing field and major event venue. The historic significance of this field was when the first Malaysian (Malaya then) Prime Minister announced the independence on 20th February 1957 to Malaysians after a gruelling 3 weeks of discussion in United Kingdom.
The sentimental value of this playing field which also used to be a favorite for fireworks, kereta lembu, hawker stalls opposite the then Malacca Club (now Merdeka Memorial) and playing field for students in nearby schools is now a distant memory as development reigns supreme.
Today Dataran Pahlawan Megamall, a RM110mil development, is a shopping haven which seats on the once historic and favorite field of Malaccans.
With the road changes in Taman Melaka Raya area, it pays to watch the road signs closely when driving in Melaka and not suprised that even the Melaka folks are left wondering which way to go. The coastal highway from Taman Melaka Raya to Klebang was recently open which eases the traffic snarl along narrow Tranquerah Road (Jalan Tengkera).
An iguana perch on a cement fence pole perhaps wondering which direction it should go next. With so much developments going on, reptiles are facing extinction should their natural habitata be replaced with modern and concrete infrastructures.
The largest shopping trolley in Malaysia can be found in the recently opened Mydin Melaka hypermarket located in MITC Ayer Keroh.
