Special prayers will be performed at the village’s community hall before the start of the festivities. A candlelight procession began from the Portuguese Settlement Community Hall with children holding candles and clad in green, to symbolise purity and innocence, spread the light throughout the settlement.
Event organising chairman Michael Banerji said the village would be expecting a bumper crowd of 8,000 visitors and tourists throughout the week.
Cultural shows, modern and shuffle dance performances will be among the highlights.
There will be games, karaoke contest and cooking competitions every day for people to win attractive prizes.
A boat decoration competition will be held on June 29 and the boats will receive blessings from the local priest.
A food and fun fair will be an all-day event starting as early as 10am on weekends and 3pm on weekdays till midnight.
To keep the crowd entertained, there will be live bands performing every night.
