The fort which was originally a Portuguese chapel dedicated to St. John, was built by the Dutch in the 18th century to ward off the attacks by the enemy from inland. This explains the reason as to why the guns (cannons) are facing towards the inland instead of the sea.
Once up the hill, visitors face the challenge of climbing the steps leading to the gate of the fort in white.
Senior citizens can be seen chatting under a leisure hut at the foot of the steps leading to the fort during the day while the health conscious Malaccans turns the hill into a sought after recreational destination towards the evening for their evening exercises whilst enjoying the serene settings within the city.
The view from the hill top used to be scenic where one gets to view Melaka town and the fringe areas city. However, the trees and undergrowth around the fort had resulted in the captivating view obstructed.
