Weekend traffic down south of the North-South Expressway was heavy and presumably most Chinese traveled back to their hometown for the Qing Ming prayers.

Melaka town was a little jammed up but still manageable unlike the jam we will encounter on holidays. However, the roads around the cemeteries are jam packed with people offering prayers to their ancestors during this annual Qing Ming which is similar to All Souls Day.

It had been a lapse of 5 years since I last stepped into Saigon and the city had certainly made great leaps ahead to be a competitive country within the region.

The changing landscapes of Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) convinced me that they will only head towards one direction from now and that's FORWARD!

Every step around the city with lots of historical monuments and heritage buildings could easily transport the visitor back into the history which they had blended it perfectly well with modernisation.

This vibrant city of Ho Chi Minh (Saigon), Vietnam had seen increased tourist arrivals each year and would continue to attract many more visitors for leisure as well as business. More hotels are sprouting within District 1 and as it is now, it would be full during weekends.

We faced this situation when we were denied of rooms in the comfortable Vien Dong Hotel due to a full occupancy situation on Friday where we finally booked ourselves into A & EM Hotel. This hotel belongs to the hotel group of the same name and had since made a major headway in providing discerning travelers accommodation in the city.

Malacca to get bigger Ferris wheel

MALACCA: A new Ferris wheel, bigger than the Eyes on Malaysia, will rise again in the historical city here.
The wheel, to be called Malaysia Eye, will stand 88m high and comprise 54 air-conditioned gondolas.

It will be able to ferry six people in a gondola for a 16-minute ride.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said Malaysia Eye would begin operating on Dec 1 with a 324- passenger capacity.
"The the cost of bringing Malaysia Eye from China and the construction of a park along with it is RM30 million.

"It would not be located in Kota Laksamana, but in Pulau Melaka," he said, adding that locating the new Ferris wheel on the Eyes on Malaysia site would have implications as it was taller and the project would have to be approved by Unesco because of its World Heritage Sites status.

Ali said the Malaysia Eye project would be handled by The Eye Sdn Bhd.

He said the Malaysia Eye would be better and bigger than the Eyes On Malaysia which closed down due to a dispute between its owners, Fitraco NV of Belgium and MST Ad Suria Sdn Bhd and Eye On Malaysia Sdn Bhd, the company leasing the Ferris wheel.

Besides the new Ferris wheel, Ali said the Pulau Melaka area would also see the development of an Arab city, hotels and apartments.

"We will also have a 1,000-room hotel near Pulau Melaka, which will be developed by the Hatten Group.

"The Malaysia Eye and other attractions in this area, especially the soon-to-be opened Sea Lion Park, are set to be the latest tourist attractions," he added.

In this picture taken along Jalan Panglima Awang, Melaka, the street lamp post is of the same height as the traffic lights!

Was this done on purpose?

Upon closer inspection, we could understand that the reason for the low height was due to the high tension power lines hovering above the road.

The best the State authorities or TNB could do is perhaps re-arrange the distance between each lamp posts as not to hinder the motorist's sight of the traffic lights.

Can it be done?

Firecrackers and fireworks is something the Chinese community will always look for during the Lunar New Year although it's banned in Malaysia. Like it or not, those items are accessible by many in Malaysia (including pasar malam) judging from the loud booms everywhere during the 15 days celebration.

As a kid we had lots of fun playing those but due to some unfortunate incidents, the ban was imposed and at the same time taking away the festivities of the celebration which Malaysians are so used to.

So they say, it's like burning money away playing fireworks and fifrecrackers which after sometime, we always look for new items to burn.

This year, had on purpose intend to do something different and much more challenging then just burning the fuse of the firecrackers and fireworks.

I had Kong Ming lanterns (also known as sky lanterns) to float in the nite skies. It requires patience and a little of "balancing" skill before one could allow the lanterns to sail up in the sky.

Having tried these lanterns few times before, I decided to buy the lanterns which costs only RM5.90 per lantern at a leading Shopping Centre.

Write all the wishes you want on the lantern before setting it up and may your wishes come true. Having written so many wishes from everyone, we set sail the lanterns amidst strong winds that has been plaguing Melaka the past few days.

It's such a thrill to see the lantern starts floating and drifts higher up into the skies.

Not too sure if the God of Prosperity had seen the lantern on his way down to grant our wishes on new year's eve!

cloudy and chilly weather in Melaka

This year's drive down to Melaka for the Chinese New Year family reunion and celebrations isn't exactly what we have experienced before i.e. sunny and windy climate conditions. Instead, we were greeted with cloudy, rainy and chilly conditions which was a welcome change given that we did not even need to have the ceiling fans switched on the whole day!

Was hoping the cloudy and chilly weather to remain for the next few days minus the rain but all hopes were gone come Thursday, 1st day of the Lunar New Year.

We can understand how fortunate leaving in higher grounds when our fellow Malaysians expecially those celebrating the New Year had to endure floods and never had the chance for family reunions this year as those affected in Segamat.

It has been custom for many Chinese living in and around Kuala Lumpur to offer prayers at the Thean Hou Temple as the Chinese Lunar New Year approaches and before the annual exodus back to their respective hometown ("balik kampung"). The prayers and offerings for good health, abundance of joy, happiness and prosperity are common across Malaysia and worldwide.

Once again, for many visitors and photography enthusiasts, it provides an opportunity to start clicking the camera shutters at the many awesome sight of the decorations made by the temple management. Ushering in the year of the Rabbit is no different with many programmes laid out to celebrate this auspicious event.

A stage with a giant lantern prop with Chinese lanterns strewn across the streets leading to the temple greets visitors within the temple grounds which one can imagine when it's lighted during night time.

However, a board which was placed just next to the steps leading to the temple building with a Lotus Sutra quote "The treasure tower emerges in any place where the lotus sutra is preached, and it represents wisdon and blessing".

That simply explains the Eifell tower like structure which was erected on the same level witht he handicraft centre and food court. Equipped with 12 drums signifying the 12 Chinese animal zodiac, visitors have the opportunity to climb up the platform to beat the drums.

Up on the prayer hall level, is the hundreds of lanterns hang across the floor as the management had done each year. Shuuter bugs were seen busy clicking away non-stop while some had enough and rested along the sides.

penang - pearl of the orient

Here are some photo shots during the walkabout on the streets of Georgetown particularly within the designated Heritage Zone. What I saw was the tremendous tourism related activities and establishment around the Zone with all heritage buildings being touched up and the old run down look of the buildings just "dissappeared".

However, many attractions specifically associated with Penang remained intact with a slight "cosmetic make-up".

The trishaws along Penang Road now sporting sponsored yellow roofs which has basically added color to the streets there. Unlike the beca(s) of their "twin" heritage city of Melaka which are extravagantly decorated with artificial flowers and music blaring from the trishaws, the ride around Georgetown would not need music as there are simply too many things to see and probably a narrated trishaw rider would be a bonus.

This heritage Chinese temple among the many found arounf the Heritage Zone withstood the test of times and with some maintenance remains a legacy for tourists to value what the past had left for the future generations to learn.

This quaint house in Penang had served as the base for Dr Sun Yat Sen's, revolutionary and political leader of Nationalist China, operations in Nanyang (South East Asia) which started the Yellow Flower Mount Revolt in 1911.

Peking Hotel is a classic example of a hotel which had survived through the years despite growing competition from modern hotels with better facilities and comfort. The hotel is known to the locals for its Health Centre operating from an annexe building behind the hotel, but to the legal fraternity and foreigners, the Soho Bar located in front of the building is a popular spot for happy hours till late.

The Odeon Cinema that is still able to attract movie goers. Though it only plays Tamil movies, the following and demand never fails to fill up the cinema hall. Long live Odeon!

This is an evidence of racial harmony in ancient times with a mosque located within a Chinese populated Chulia Street. We would welcome more of these to display to our visitors of the racial harmony we had lived in for many years.

Despite the slightly modern look of the push-cart, the man and the dish of the roadside trade remains. Don't be surprise that the taste could be even better then those in the nicer feel restaurants at higher prices.

At a glance, it looks like smoke billlowing from Penang island's tallest building. On a closer look, the "smoke" is actually passing clouds.

Kampung Kaka? Penang had Kaka way before the famous Brazilian footballer Kaka made its name. Re-think about how the road got its name and the crows on the road signs, it easily could point out that the sound from the crows was the actual reason for the Kampung Kaka.

It's rather interesting to see a house being squeezed in between two larger home fronts. This is Georgetown, full of surprises!

A little touch up of the old and we have a heritage house among the many in the Heritage Zone that had been cleverly converted into handicraft shops, hotels and restaurants.

Decorative tiles of many designs adorned five-foot corridors ("kaki lima") of shops and houses around the heritage zone as above and it certainly adds color to the buildings around the area.

Had just arrived from the cold and chiily wintery conditions of Europe when the call to sample Malaysian monsoon arose. Tired I may be but can't shrug off from the call of duty and possibly signed off as my last business travel for 2010.

Not knowing which part of the East Coast we are heading, but finally ended up in Legend Resort Cherating though i was initially informed that Kuantan is the destination. Lost and just felt liked being "kidnapped".

Arrived and while checking-in, we came across a female trainee receptionist who is obviously not properly trained to serve the guests and lack of awareness on the events going on in the resort. We could see the stress and tense on her face as she struggles to check-us in.

We finally got our keys for Sea View rooms on the new block with rather confusing paths leading to the rooms. The rooms have higher rates but no complaints as I missed the high monsoon waves on the East Coast and eager to view it from the room balcony where I know I'll be safe.

Drawing the sliding door curtains apart to view the sea, dissapointment greeted me.

Muddy beaches! Dark clouds with low tides.Missing was also the high monsoon waves ala Hawaii Five-O, dangerous but may be challenging for surfing enthusiasts.

That's real sad considering this stretch of beach is one of the most sought after during weekends and holidays.
Also, watch out for the mosquitoeswaiting to join you in the nice fresh new rooms!

Beds are a little high but comfortable. Bad choice of dark brown color for the furniture fittings made the rooms look rather with cheap China sourced fittings. Bathrooms is nice and what I like most was the rain shower.

Programs on TV are all terrestrial local channels and Vision Four offerings which is rather lame.

Food was "so-so" and nothing special which makes the resort really fit into a budget accommodation type though the rates may suggest otherwise.

For less frills and expectation accommodation, Legend Resort would fit for the individuals who prefer less luxury then other resorts like Club Med.

Malaysia has much to offer to visitors to this country and had never failed to awe them. Whether it's dining, sightseeing or shopping during the Malaysia Mega Sale, it can proved tiring especially in the humid weather of Kuala Lumpur.

As the saying goes "shop till you drop", here, someone had ensure that you will still be able to take a short rest while crossing the roads in the event you had too much of walking around in the city or the traffic just refuses to let you cross the road.

Here again, Malaysia has always lived up to its ability of a warm and hospitable country!

It's 1.1.11 ... Happy New Year!

While the celebrations to usher 2011 ended early this morning, streets were surprisingly clean and with only light traffic. I guess the younger generation of revellers were all recuperating at home from a late night partying and hanging out at "mamaks" till the wee hours.

The fireworks display from various locations around KL was simply mesmerising when viewed from a commanding spot on hill tops and was really a lovely sight.

Jalan Ampang road where Zouk is lcoated does not leave any trace of a club which had hosted a night of New Year party which would make even "Bones", NCIS, etc. have a tough time spotting for clues. The roads and surrounding have all been cleared over night by the City Hall workers but the only evidence that did not get away was the few balloons which got stucked between the tree branches.

With this, wishing all a great 2011 year ahead with lots of good health, wisdom and prosperity!

The Mamak of Sydney

Malaysia Truly Asia reflects the melting pot of language, race, nationality and religion happening in Malaysia which is evident by the fusion of clothes, food and culture of the various races commonly found in this South East Asian country.

Pual Keating (former Prime Minister of Australia) had gone on record insisting that Australia was part of Asia?

Australia had always been the focal point for students in Asia wanting to further their studies other then the Vietnamese refugees seeking permanent stay in the Down Under. Today, a cosmopolitan city like Sydney enjoys a larger mix of nationalities with many coming from China, Korea, Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Some of the former students whom had obtained permanent resident status got themselves adjusted to the world class city of Sydney that further adds colors to the multi cultural, race and language which naturally lends a sense of attraction to not only for students and business, but leisure travelers whom had made repeated visits to the city.

With the city hosting many nationalities from various countries, food to suit their taste buds are equally important and many migrants started restaurant business to cater for the travelers and locals. One particular restaurant is the Mamak restaurant located along Goulburn Street, which seats on the fringe of Sydney's very own Chinatown.

Mamak is a little Malaysian managed restaurant which serves authentic mamak styled delicacies at reasonable prices minus the "mamaks" behind the cooking. The only thing different here is that it is considered a fast food outlet without the tables and chairs on the streets for the normal teh tarik sessions.

The line of the normal tables and chairs are replaced by long queues in the evenings. I would not blame if the queue is mistaken for concert ticket queue.

They had earned rave gastronomic reviews and one wold expect that similar outlets in various parts of the city or Australia but that's not the case. This outlet is the one and only in the world (today) and s in it's career website page declared, it would clearly well be on its way to becoming an institution in Sydney!

fashion statements is the right to express every individual's own attitude, lifestyle and point of view on the clothing style, clothing or set of clothes and not necessarily be a fashionista, who follows the clothing trends and no necessarily be a shopping freak.

rightfully, expression on statements can only reveal the designers thoughts on the trends and does not necessarily be accepted generally as we can see that trends of some clothing designs had gone a full 360 while some e.g. cheongsams, suits etc. remained a constant favorite.

keeping the streets safe and traffic in order had always been a priority of a metropolitan city. the same goes for Kuala Lumpur, home to 2+ million urbanites which is fairly small if compared to other Asian cities like Shanghai (20+million).

this is a typical scene of Kay-El street junctions which comes complete with traffic lights, pedestrian crossings and security cameras mounted on pole top to allow the city cops to monitor the traffic and crime.

This is the sign of the latest destination which everyone would want to be at least for once. Slated to be fully opened in December 2010, at least some of the F&B outlets are in operation that provides patrons with a great view of the scenic lake.

Penang had long been the nasi kandar "headquarters" of Malaysia which are the signature dish of the mamaks (Indian Muslim) vendors that had grown into a chain of restaurants across Malaysia with some commonly known restaurants of Pelita, Kayu and many more.

However, when in Penang, none of this names really stand-out but the most sought after would be Line Clear Nasi Kandar, Nasi Beratur Stall, Kassim Nasi Kandar, Hameediyah Restaurant and Restoran Kassim Mustafa.

The Nasi Kandar which I had patronise since I first stepped into Penang and till now had always been Line Clear Nasi Kandar which operates in the alley along Jalan Penang. The taste had remained intact through the years as I believe that the recipe had been now handed now through many generations.

Gone were the blackboard used to jot down the price charge for each customer and replaced by the small bill which can be typically found in any mamak restaurant today. I miss the moment when you pay, the cashier would remove the charge from the board and declares "line clear".

And that's exactly how the stall had been named Line Clear.

What used to be a dark and little less hygienic stall, these had been upgraded with cemented floor with proper roofs over the dining tables with industrial fans blowing overhead to keep diners cool from the spicy and tasty curry being served.

The stall now seems much more organized and very much cleaner now which improves any possibility of me continuing to dine in Line Clear Nasi Kandar.

Pictures and newspaper clippings related to the stall now adorned a section of the wall while the wall of the shops have large printed pictures of the stall over the years and the city of Penang.

My call would still be Line Clear for the next nasi kandar Pulau Pinang lunch or dinner!

Love Lane, Penang and the story

City of Georgetown was declared Unesco World Heritage City on 7th July 2008 and along with the declaration by UNESCO, a 109.38ha Core Zone was gazetted along with a Buffer Zone of 150.04ha which literally covers almost the whole city where the historic and pre-war buildings are located on the island.

Within the Core Zone, the many narrow streets or lanes linking one another forms a maze for visitors to marvel at the many collection of buildings which some built during the 16th-17th century. Walking around the area is truly an experience and a truly "living" museum!

The many diverse street names reflects a history of the convergence of various travelers worldwide into the city and had been retained by the State Government.

Of the many names, Love Lane strikes a drive for me to find out why the Lane had been named as such. That search wasn't for long as walking towards the end of the Lane provided me with the answers. The Penang Heritage Trust had done a fine job of putting up boards to provide information of such to visitors while adding a little humour into it.

Afterall, isn't travelling or holidaying suppose to be fun!

Cover charge found in restaurants, bars and entertainment outlets are normally a fee to defray the cost of entertainment for other accompaniments brought in by the guest which is universally accepted.

And we hear recently that restaurants and kopitiams charges the customers for drinking water in Malaysia as an option to mineral water bottles in their outlets.

This signage is what I found in a Penang Road coffee shop while having Penang Fried Kuey Teow lunch.

A little amusing and confusing, I might say but it goes to say nothing's for free these days!

Well, as the saying goes, Malaysia is a country full of surprises for the visitors to this country!

on the Melaka Heritage Trail (in pictures) - part I

Melaka Heritage Trail?

I had never thought about this heritage trail since I was born and school in this historic city filled with history, great food and great people. So when I was informed that we are suppose to play host to visitors from Australia, I was thinking it's host as usual but I had missed the fact that this time it's in Melaka and not Kuala Lumpur.

Rising early on Sunday morning, some light breakfast before heading to the hotel to pick our guests for the tour of the attractions of Melaka with a special request to taste the chicken rice ball and cendol of Melaka.

So it was an impromptu decision to park the car and start our heritage trail on foot from Dataran Pahlawan as we make our way out from the complex and head towards the Park amidst dark skies looming overhead. Nevertheless, we carried on believing that the earlier downpour would cool the environment and make it conducive for walking around.

So off we go along Jalan Kota where the remnants of Bastion Middleburg (left pic) became our first stop. Though nothing much but the it was still a piece of history which had withstood the test of time and development which gives us hope that the future generations can still treasure this city rich in history and aptly referred as "Where It All Began".

The former Hongkong and Shanghai Bank building looks resplendent in white and another testimony of the British rule of Malaysia (then known as Malaya). The building have now been declared as a national heritage and rightfully preserved as a living history.

This building was also where, as I was told, the workplace of my grandfather and uncle which they take great pride when working in the banks those days was a most sought after employment during the British rule.

Most Babas naturally went into the banking industry to continue where the forefathers had left.

Time to move on as we cross the road to make our way towards the replica of the Melaka Sultanate water mill along Jalan Quayside located along the Melaka river banks leading towards the Straits of Melaka.

This stretch of road and area used to be the port or harbour where godowns dominate the area to provide storage for the goods imported and transported through the port. Goods barter trade between Melaka and Indonesia traders are a common feature then.

Used to be the sight of trading boats along the river banks have now changed to river cruise boats plying the Melaka River, taking passengers up stream to enjoy great sights of Melaka of the past and present.

This area have been promised with much more development and it would be great to be able to see the luxury hotel, Casa Del Rio being constructed across the river. Swamp tree stumps (bakau) and coal (arang) brought in from Sumatera Indonesia used to be stored in the godowns of the hotel site but nothing of that history can be seen today.

One thing for certain is that the water along the river looks much better as compared many years before this due to pollution and it's something which Malaccans look forward to.

Next stop in Dataran Quayside is the re-constructed Bastion Middleburg which was accidentally found during the initial construction of Menara Taming Sari. The findings had been a revelation to historians and people of Melaka who now believe that there are many more history beneath the buildings along the river banks which can be unearth as documented in the history journals.

It's a commendable effort by the Government to re-construct part of the fort which stretches till A'Famosa fort where cost and logistics have become a major factor to further continuation of the find.

As we see it, the Bastion serves as a strategic defence fort to prevent attacks from across the Melaka River which is now linked by the Clock Tower bridge. Cannons adorned the Bastion as an memory that battles were fought at that location which justifies the armoury placed on the Bastion.

Across the river is the old Harpers building which have now been converted into a restaurant of the original building name with a scenic view overlooking the Melaka River.

The fact that there are no further barriers between the Harper building and water from the Melaka River, it goes to show another olden days architecture marvel that could withstood the years and remain standing solidly on the banks.

Water monitor lizards are a common sight in the Melaka River banks which are conducive for its habitat, feeding on fish, bird, rodent and even rubbish! We saw two on that particular day and it was simply shocking to see someone throwing rocks at the two cold blooded.

With the Unesco World Heritage City status, the living history museum within the declared heritage zone is poise for better days and have seen the benefits of securing such status for worldwide recognition as a prime tourist destination.

Melaka city is separated by the Melaka River and connected by 4 main bridges namely Jambatan Chan Koon Cheng (Kampung Pantai), Jambatan Hang Tuah, Jalan Tun Mutahir (beside Spice Garden) and the Clock Tower Bridge (Jambatan Tan Kim Seng).

The Clock Tower and Hang Tuah bridges are the 2 important bridges and heavily used but today, the former have been reduced to vehicles getting into Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock (Heeren Street), Jonker Street (Jalan Hang Jebat) and Jalan Tukang Emas tourist zones.

The areas turn into a fairyland at night where all along the river banks are lighted and the many cafes lining up along the Riverside Walk lends the air of festivity. We can't deny that the "festivities" happens each weekend where visitors from outside Melaka throng into this quaint little historic city to savour the history, food, entertainment and to many, shopping.

With a rich history, its position as a world destination can never be denied and have since been attracting visitors worldwide. Staying overnite in Melaka is sufficient note than a decade ago but not during the present. The many attractions are able to justify a longer stay not just the tourist attractions but to taste the many local authentic food of Melaka.

Our next stop is the famed red color Stadhuys building, a Dutch legacy which was once the official residence of the Dutch Governor built between 1641 and 1660. These buildings are believed to be the oldest Dutch buildingsin the East.

Bibik House Cendol

Cendol in Melaka?

There are many stalls or shops selling this sweet dessert which are very much concentrated around Jonker Walk area with the more popular ones being Bibik House Cendol and Jonker 88. I would not walk along Jonker Walk solely for cendol as there are many other places of this great tasting and popular dessert espeially on a hot sunny afternoon.

My safe bet for great cendol in Melaka since school days would always be the Mamak at the old market (now store selling clothes), clock tower (not too sure if the mamak is still around) and the mamak at the foot of Bukit Cina (ask the locals).

What more can I do when my guests are lined up to get into Jonker 88 on a drizzling Sunday afternoon just to taste the cendol but I dread the long queue when brother suggested Bibik House as an alternative which I accept gleefully.

"Uncle, cendol dua!"

"Dua eh? Laksa mau?" (Only two? Would you like to try our laksa?)

And here comes the Bibik serving us each a short noodle strand on four little sauce plates to taste the nyonya recipe paste they are selling in the shop which I declined. Mother's recipe had always been the best I would think.

When the cendol is served, the sweet smell of gula melaka was fantastic as well as the fresh looking cendol. However, the shaved ice is a little too much on a cool afternoon while the coconut milk was fresh and pure i.e. no mixing of water which typical of nyonya food.

As the first scooped gets into my mouth, i sincerely found the gula melaka was a little to thick and sweet for my liking and doesn't really blend well with the gula melaka but the cendol is real fresh.

For RM3 a medium bowl and rather touristy priced, there was nothing special which provides me great satisfaction to return to Bibik House for more cendol.

By the time we finish the cendol, kiddo was already tired from all the walking since morning.

This shop do sell pineapple tarts but I still find that the tarts I normally buy are way above the ones I find aorund Jonker Walk which are baked for commercial whilst the ones I had are home made.

When I saw the signage of a shop in Kemaman bearing the National brand and picture of the mascot, it is a pleasure to note that the business had survived through time which could date way back into the 50s.

Today the shop only sells bicycles instead of the electrical appliances which once filled the racks and every space of the shop.

Ever growing competition in the household electrical appliances in the town has raised the need to diversify and venture into other business.

That one thing remained through the years of business is the signage above the shop entrance and is one of the last few in Malaysia.

It's shocking that an individual designated CEO of Dubai based company could resort to such modus operandi and is written in the script of his speeches or presentation. We wonder if business ethics are not important for a foreigner in Malaysia?

Penang Nasi Kandar is still the best!

Nasi kandar which originates from the Mamaks (Indian Muslims) of Penang is a popular dish that any visitor cannot ignore to taste.

While today Mamaks restaurant are available nationwide serving variety of Indian Muslim food including nasi kandar, the taste of those in Penang e.g. Line Clear are still the ones to beat. With commercialisation and the development of chain restaurants, the food preparation and quality of some had perhaps taken a slight dip.

One particular Mamak Restaurant in Kuala Lumpur where I had tasted was simply atrocious!

Along with many Mamak restaurants, the charges for the dish is higher then those of the Malay and Indian restaurants to justify the recipe which had been handed down through many generations. Just sotong (cuttlefish) and fried chicken with nasi beriani rice cost RM13.00.

What irks me most is that the restaurant helpers and waiters are simply too arrogant or not interested in serving the customers as we were served rice which had been left cold. The fried chicken and fried sotong are also cold while there were no intiative to heat the food up.

Ordering drinks had also became a hassle when no waiters came to assist us till I had to take a walk to the counter which was rather shocking when all customers on that particular day could see many of the staff were lazing around or taking a nap.

This is definitely my first and the last that I am stepping into this Mamak restaurant while the hygiene is left much to be desired. We had thought places like Line Clear in Chulia Street and Penang Road junction is bad but this could equal that or even worse.

Although my son finished the food (probably due to hunger after school), it left a bad experience of the restaurant.

Mee Rebus Mail @ Setiawangsa

Great tasting Mee Rebus in the city?

Many KL lites whom are originally from other parts of Malaysia would always claim that they have a better variant of food back in their hometown. I am no different but to make the hundreds of kilometres for foos can be pretty tiring and thus, the search for food which can be better or equal those back in the hometown starts.

Frankly, I would think that Hassan Mee Rebus in Padang Temu, Melaka would be the best since I'm from Melaka but that search had taken me to many other stalls or shops offering the same dish but none came close to Mail Mee Rebus @ Setiawangsa which I have patronise for almost 15 years (still craving for more).

They had started from the "pacak" hawker stalls under the pine trees facing the field and business was brisk. It was there I started enjoying the great taste of Mail Mee Rebus dining under the shady trees and cool breeze, a favorite ever since I was a kid.

Through the years, the taste of Mail Mee Rebus have never changed and that's the most important "ingredient" for great tasty food!

They have since re-located into Medan Selera Taman Setiawangsa and business as usual.

You would have to go there early for lunch or there is nothing else to savour as this is one of the more popular stalls in the Medan Selera. The 6-7 hours of business from 11am is all they need to attract food lovers from all over Kuala Lumpur.

Other then Mee Rebus, it's Mee Rojak, Pasembur and Mee Goreng is equally great. Though there are few other offerings, those had always been my favorites and longing for more.

Price of food are reasonable with the servings (of course, if you are a regular, you get some added benefits) while the ever smiling and friendly Mail will always be there to serve you.

Like a Malaysian food culture, those kind of food must always go along with Cendol and yes, the stall next to Mail Mee Rebus has fresh cendols to offer to blend your tastebuds.

Why not make Mail Mee Rebus your next stop and it could make you decide to list as one of the best Mee Rebus in KL!

What divides between Malaysia and island Republic of Singapore?

Straits of Johor (Selat Johor in Bahasa Malaysia) is a narrow strait which separates the southern most Peninsular Malaysia state of Johor from Singapore in the south. This 50km long narrow water channel is also known as Tebrau Strait, Selat Tebrau or Tebrau Reach which incidentally is also the natural boundary separating the two countries.

The strait is also home to many World War II history and battles including the sinking of a 9,850-tonne Japanese battleship cruiser, Takao on 31 July 1945.

Today both ends of the strait is connected by two man-made links which is the The Causeway and Malaysia-Singapore Second Link. The earlier built Causeway in year 1924, links between Johor Bahru (JB) and Woodlands while the second, which is further east of JB, connects Gelang Patah in Johor to Tuas in Singapore.

The seafront itself is a major attraction to many leisure activities for the locals and visitors.

Jalan Ibrahim Sultan that faces the seafront on the west end of JB city, is home to the famous De'Bali Restaurant and Bistro, a famous nightspot as well Stulang Laut Mee Rebus, a local noodle dish at a reasonable price.

On the east side of the JB city, is Danga Bay which stretches 3kilometres facing the seafront. Aptly referred to as Vision City of the South, it promises an integrated development compising leisure, entertainment, residential and business.

Though there aren't any beaches on the seafront, the breeze is sufficient for anyone to have a leisurely rest under the swaying palm trees in the bustling city of JB.

Getting into the city of gateway to Singapore is easy by road with the North-South Expressway and the available public transport from all major towns in Malaysia.

Guest service levels and operational efficiency had for many centuries been the responsibility of the manual labour in hospitality industry.

Is the human workforce the only solution to provide guest centric services in the industry?

While many senior top hoteliers today had grown to their present positions through rank and file whilst learning the tricks of the trade along the way, they had always shy away from adopting technology to improve the services. The reason they distanced themselves from technology is largely attributed to the environment that they had grown accustomed to over the years which heavily on manual tasks.

However, many have come to realisation the importance of technology for the hotel to stay competitive and relevant for the world is the market which includes end-to-end computerization. The view of computerization as an added expenditure to the hotel operational costs is largely a forlorn fact where many had seen the online booking as a tool to allow the hotel to optimize the rate yield and plan it's resources.

Technology today is a business tool which no hotels can ignore and any accommodation provider who are deferring the application of technology, stands the risk of distancing themselves further away from the front runners.

Resources to manage effectively the technology investment had also been a determining factor as staff turnover rate is high in the industry thus causing a severe issue of continuity to maintain the business tools deployed.

Training and re-training of staff is always a suspect when there is no proper handover procedures being defined as a Standard Operational Procedure (SOP) with the situation worsen if the business application is complex. Some hotels are worsed off and do not even have SOP.

While many of the hospitality technology applications available today are distributed by the foreign developers through local companies, the transfer pricing and mark-ups deny many hotels the ability to adopt technology at an affordable investment.

Hospitality technology products in the market today are fragmented and being placed together through interfacing (not integration) of standard APIs to overcome the shortcomings of the respective technology providers. The forming of technology provider alliance or workgroup is intended to overcome this inter-party communication greatly but could never steer away from interfacing.

There are developers whom had build on an integrated environment but had failed to understand the simplicity and practicality aspects of the solutions for day-to-day operational perspective.

winding road up Penang Hill

Was in Penang recently, Penang Hill and Botanical Gardens to be exact.

After the rather delicious lunch char kuey teow of the famous goggle equipped hawker in Lorong Selamat, Georgetown, our tummy were rather full as we tucked in additional cendol and lo bak. Though simple hawker fare lunch, this is undoubtedly one of the better lunch I had on travels.

It was a pleasant surprise upon arrival when we spotted the two controversial "majestic" arches being erected at the entrance and car park area of the Botanical Gardens. We had a good view of the arches and it was a fact that one of the arch is indeed tilting being witnessed by the many visitors whom had made the visit there during the school holidays.

It was then we took note that the Penang Hill railway service had been stopped for upgrading works and expected to resume services in October 2010. No other better way up the hill then hiring the jeeps available at the road leading up to the top.

Off we jumped onto a jeep and set the trip up along winding roads when we set upon elderly Penang folks whom we are told hiked up the hill everyday for a journey taking them approximately an hour.

As I counted the friendly nature hikers we came across along the drive up, I stopped counting and can't help feeling embarassed about how discipline these bunch of daily hikers are when we KL city folks are destined to gym and jogging around the housing estate or parks.

Mother nature had been kind enough thus far but there are signs that correctional actions had to be taken soon to reinforced the hill slopes which had seen many landslides lately.

Reaching the top, we realised that the cooler temperature climate isn't there anymore while the number of visitors to Penang Hill had taken a beating due to the temporary halt of the train services.

Other then the pollution visibly seen from atop the Hill, the breathtaking view of the mainland and Georgetown is simply awesome!

Our jeep driver up the hill gave us a great narration of the bungalows, State Government actions etc. available up on the hill to make my first trip up Penang Hill by road an informative and appreciative of the green.

It's at this point that I reinforced my belief that we should start retaining the greens and do our part in preserving the environment which our future generations would be able to enjoy.

This is not about the Hindi movie, Balle Balle but a local group of talented and versatile musicians whom had made a name for the group worldwide including playing in various official functions in Malaysia.

I had heard a lot about this group but never had the chance to sample their music ill I came face-to-faceat the Colours of 1 Malaysia event last night in Dataran Merdeka.

That chance encounter had certainly left a lasting impression on me and I definitely looking forward for more of Balle Balle. As they broke out with the song Sway popularize by Michael Buble while mingling with the massive crowd in Dataran Merdeka, the smiles were written on the faces of the foreigners whom easily recognised the tune.

Judging from the body sways from the musicians themselves, you can tell that these are musicians with music in their hearts and souls. They enjoyed playing music to entertain and evidenced by the repertoire of songs they are able to perform from their music bank.

Led by Isnain Abd Rahim, the band originated from Kampung Api in Kuala Selangor, Selangor, the 6-8 piece band had set out to popularize local music to the world. Their versatility is well known to the many whom had witnessed their performance where they would play popular Malay, Hindi, Chinese, English and their own compositions effortlessly.

While their "brand" music is something different, they differentiate themselves well with their costumes. A "tudung saji" (traditional Malay food cover) for headgear, colorful sarongs and shirts which is completed with the traditional wooden clogs reflecting the fishermen of East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

This is truly a 1 Malaysia band of musicians!

Malaysia ranked 9th most travelled destination by UNWTO

KUALA LUMPUR: The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has ranked Malaysia the ninth most travelled to destination in the world last year, said Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen. She said although 2009 had been a difficult year for tourism globally, it was a good year for the Malaysian tourism industry.

The Malaysian tourism industry contributed RM1 billion per week to the economy in 2009, providing employment to over one million Malaysians.

"It is the government's commitment to ensure that the Malaysian tourism industry continues to flourish and to provide the best tourism experience to tourists from all over the world," she said in her speech at the Colours of 1Malaysia 2010 programme at Dataran Merdeka here Saturday night.

The programme, an annual event organised by the Tourism Ministry, was opened by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin.

Also present were the Raja Permaisuri Agong, Tuanku Nur Zahirah, and Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim.

This year's "Colours of 1Malaysia" celebration is a huge parade, interspersed with street performances to show off Malaysia's unique tourism products, like the homestay, food and fruit fair, mega sales, shopping, beautiful beaches and resorts and eco-tourism.

There were also performances by the three main ethnic groups in Malaysia, comprising the Orang Asli, with their "Sewang", the Chinese and Indians with their respective traditional dances.

Other performances included a dikir barat, involving 5,500 participants, a performance which has been entered into the Malaysia Book Of Record as a show with the largest number of participants. -- Bernama

The screen display says it all about the event I was about to witness and it's truly a Welcome to Colours of 1 Malaysia! What a "riot" of colours, culture, race, food, holiday destinations and everything Malaysia witnessed at the event.

It's a first students from various schools in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor participated in the event which reflects an event for all ages. Their energetic performances and well synchronised movements are credible given the tutoring and guidance provided to them over a month to perfect the moves to the rhythm.

The trees along Jalan Raja are not to be left out and gives the event a feel of party which was exactly taking place in the 2 hours event.

The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) building were decorated with laser displays projecting various community messages have certainly add cheer to the event. The displays were a sight to behold.

The opening act with dances all dressed up in cultural costumes depicting the various races found in Malaysia and dancing in harmony to the songs.

Part of the opening act where drums ruled the opening song. Looking at the smiling faces and energetic beat of the drums, all we can say is that the participants had a whale of a time.

The Sultan Abdul Samad clock tower was the centre of the event and with performances by the participants in front of the VIP stage. The laser display projected on the clock tower adds more colour to the many dancers who were on the stage constantly changing their acts to fit the main dances on show.

The Mayin Jo-oh traditional mask dance of the Mah Meri tribe, an indegenous ("Orang Asli") tribe found in Malaysia, is the only mask dance by the community found in Pulau Carey, Selangor. The other dance performed was the "Sewang" dance of the aboriginal Temuan tribe.

Food was part of the theme and how appropriate. Every corner and hour there will be food to savour in Malaysia and aptly, they had mock-up stalls depicting the more popular local dishes or "not to be missed" for foreigners to Malaysia.

Fabulous food! How true! Available a wide array of local and foreign restaurants in Malaysia to serve everyone's taste buds.

The lion dances are almost a common sight at such cultural events and 30 prancing lions, dragons and tiger were the highight of this chinese culture segment of the parade.

The fan dance was quite unique and we had participants from all races performing the dance in unison reflecting the spirit of 1 Malaysia. It is perhaps a country where the multi-ethnic races lived under a single roof for 50+ years and in harmony.

A rock concert featuring a local rock band was part of the presentation for the crowd lining up along Jalan Raja Laut before the parade started.

Foreign tourists had a great time clicking away the many colorful scenes which thwy would cherish for a long time.

The waiting was too much as these three participants had decided that a short rest would help.

Malaysia moves up in UN tourism rankings

DUBAI: Malaysia has moved up two notches in the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (Untwo) barometer, placing the country among the top 10 in term of tourist arrivals for the year 2009.

Malaysia secured ninth position, just below Turkey and Germany, in term of arrivals. This is considered a remarkable achievement amidst the gloomy scenario for the global tourism industry.

In 2008, Malaysia was in the 11th position but gradually recorded an increase in arrivals due to continuous promotional campaigns by the Tourism Ministry.

Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said being among the top 10 was a great accomplishment for all Malaysians.

"We are elated by this positive development. Malaysia is a kaleidoscope of cultures and I am sure it will continue to charm tourists," she told Malaysian journalists after opening the Arabian Travel Mart (ATM) here on Tuesday.

Among the event's participants are 120 delegations from 83 organisations, including hoteliers, tour operators and Tourism Board representatives.

This year also marked Malaysia's 17th year of participation at the event, the largest trade and consumer travel show in the Gulf region.

Dr Ng said she received the Untwo report upon her arrival here.

Based on the Untwo website, France continued to be the world's top major tourism destination in terms of arrivals and ranked third in receipts.

The United States ranked first in receipts and second in arrivals while Spain maintained its position as the second biggest earner worldwide and the first in Europe, ranking third in arrivals.

Dr Ng urged Malaysians, especially those involved in the tourism industry, to continue striving to woo more visitors to Malaysia.

"Those in the hospitality industry should develop more innovative products to continue placing Malaysia among the top holiday destinations in the World," she said.

Dr Ng said the tourism industry was the second-largest income earner for the country last year, generating a revenue of RM52bil.

KUALA TERENGGANU: Pulau Redang "rated as one of the world’s most beautiful islands" is set to be turned into a getaway exclusively for the rich and famous.

Terengganu Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said said the state government would no longer approve the construction of chalet-type accommodation on the renowned island, which is much visited by the diving community.

"Only hotels rated five-star and above will be allowed to be built," he said when met after the state assembly sitting here yesterday.

In future, only wealthy individuals would be able to afford holidays in Pulau Redang as hotel rooms will cost no less than US$500 (RM1,599) a night, Ahmad said.

He that said with the decision to turn the island into a high-end holiday destination, current chalets catering for backpackers would have to upgrade and raise their rates.

Asked if the move would draw criticism from non-governmental organisations, Ahmad said it was the only way to save the surrounding rich marine life and prevent environmental destruction due to pollution and indiscriminate littering.

"Some of the budget accommodation places on the island have no proper sewage system and waste is directed to the sea, and this destroys the corals," he said.

Apart from that, Pulau Redang is a jewel for Terengganu and the 10th most beautiful island in the world, Ahmad said.

"Efforts must be made to save the island from deteriorating environmentally. Those on budget excursions can visit other islands like Pulau Kapas and Pulau Perhentian that are equally charming."

Pulau Redang, a popular holiday destination for locals as well as foreigners, attracts about 100,000 visitors annually including many who flock there to visit the marine park.

Terengganu Tourist Association deputy president Alex Lee lauded the move, saying that it was time for Malaysia to create its own niche market.

"Redang has only one five-star hotel and others are mostly budget accomodations," he said.

He believed the move by Ahmad was initiated out of concern for the environment as damage to the corals had been extensive.

The owner of an eight-room hotel in Redang, however, was worried that his livelihood would be affected if Pulau Redang became an exclusive holiday destination.

He said the move would affect many holidaymakers, both local and foreign, who would not be able to afford to stay in Pulau Redang if the state government went ahead with the niche market proposal.

"I hope the state government will meet budget hotel and chalet operators in Redang to get our views and include us in the planning," said the man, who wanted to be known only as Dina,

He also said the state government should ensure there was proper drainage and sewage on the island for better waste disposal.

Another chalet operator, Nik Kamal Nik Husin, 43, said the move would only burden the villagers on the island as many were renting out rooms to budget travellers.

He also said only a handful of irresponsible chalet operators were directing the waste into the sea.

The state government, he said, should build a centralised sewage treatment to deal with the waste disposal problem.

SEREMBAN, 29 Mac (Bernama) -- "Barrack Stay" or army style stay at the former Port Dickson army camp has become the latest attraction to draw tourists to the 'Army Town' of Port Dickson.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said staying at the army camp was among three elements promoted by the army town of Port Dickson to attract a niche market of tourists, including those from overseas.

"We have not reached a stage to allow tourists to go through a army style shooting experience like that practiced in some countries but we have started the first step towards introducing an army style stay," he told reporters after a development committee meeting with Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan Monday.

The concept of renting guns and armoured cars for the public, introduced by countries like Vietnam and Ukraine, would be in cooperated in the "Barrack Stay" package soon.

He added that the Armed Forces museum in Port Dickson would be restored while a "boulevard" extended from the camp to the beach front.

We want to see the army town in Port Dickson to become as popular as the West Point Academy in the United States, he said.

The name Sheila had always been immediately relate to Malaysia's very own jazz queen, Sheila Majid.

I would remember the time when she kept churning out hits after hits followed by her sell out Warna tour back in the 80s. Then, I had just started my working career and could not manage to find time to watch her live in concert till the one in Dewan Hang Tuah, Melaka when I took a bus down from Kuala Lumpur in time for her 8pm Warna concert.

Was I glad to make that decision and was the first of many more occassions I watched Sheila Majid live in concert.

That started my collection of her albums of Dimensi Baru, Emosi and Legenda.

Now, she is back live in person to launch her first music video single "Dengarkanlah" on 31 March 2010, 5-7pm at Pavilion KL although this song premiered in Java Jazz Festival 2010 in Jakarta March 5th, 2010.

This is to mark her 25th year in the music entertainment business.

Heard it many times about people I know could not live the day without their cuppa coffee! For some, just a morning "fix" does not give them the boost to carry out the day's task and need multiple "fixes".

Instead of the traditional coffee our ancestors are used to e.g. Aik Cheong and Nam Seng, we now have international brands like Coffee Bean, Starbucks, San Francisco Coffee, Gloria Jeans etc. providing Malaysians that booster to start their morning.

Further on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, we have the popular Hai Peng Kopitiam (picture below) in the quaint town of Kemaman which have coffee lovers coming from all over to have the original taste of family brewed coffee inherited through generations till to-day.

Old Town had gone a step further by teaming up with banks to open up a small outlet within the bank premises to serve their products while the customers wait in the queue to perform their business transactions. This have proven to be a "viable" team and the international brands have follow suit such as San Francisco Coffee teaming up with fashion retailer Esprit.

The growing influence of international coffee brands have grown and we now have coffees from continental countries such as Italy in Kay El (Kuala Lumpur). They do have their followers in foreigners who prefer the espresso kind of coffee while I would think they have not been bitten by the local coffee taste yet.

DUBAI: Kuala Lumpur, the bustling capital of Malaysia and already popular among tourists, tops the list for cheapest holiday destination, according to global travel specialist STA Travel UK.

The list is based on what is described by STA Travel as the main ingredients for a good holiday -- a meal in a local restaurant, a pint of beer, a night in a hostel, a bus ride and a sightseeing bus tour around the city.

When totalling the typical price for such items, Kuala Lumpur emerged the cheapest at 13.09 pound sterling, followed by Hanoi (18.29 pound sterling), Seoul (18.38 pound sterling), Mexico City (22.84 pound sterling), Beijing 24.82 pound sterling), Istanbul (27.38 pound sterling), Bangkok (27.40 pound sterling) and Cape Town (31.68 pound sterling).

Students In Holiday Islands Can Be Apprentice Tour Guides, Says Tourism Minister

KUALA TERENGGANU, March 25 (Bernama) -- The Tourism Ministry plans to get secondary schools students in holiday islands to become apprentice tour guides.

Its minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said for a start, the ministry would work with the Terengganu government to initiate a pilot project on this in Pulau Perhentian.

"They are more suited to act as tour guides because they have more detailed knowledge about the islands they live in.

"Selected students will be trained for this and they can be trained outside of school hours," she said.

Ng told this to reporters after attending a briefing on the upgrading of tourist facilities at the culture and crafts complex in Pasar Kedai Payang here today.

'Jurassic' Gua Bewah Beckons Tourists To Lake Kenyir

KUALA TERENGGANU, March 23 (Bernama) -- Located some 40 km from Kuala Berang, Asia's largest man-made lake Tasik Kenyir in Hulu Terengganu is well known among nature lovers.

Not many know that the 38,000 hectare-wide Tasik Kenyir, 'blessed' with 14 waterfalls and small islands such as Pulau Bayas, Pulau Sumas, Pulau Jelatang and Pulau Batu Pipit or Pulau Mahathir, is also rich with 'jurassic' relics.

Gua Bewah, that sits 578 metres from above sea level, is known as a limestone hill that exhibits unique formations of stalactites and stalagmites including that shaped like an ostrich and a human prostrating.

Besides all of these, Gua Bewah is also known to be the place of civilisation during the Mesolithic and Neolithic ages.

MESOLITHIC, NEOLITHIC

Gua Bewah is believed to have taken its name from the nearby Bukit Bewah.

A group of archeologists from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), National Museum Department and Terengganu Museum Board that carried out excavation work at the cave had recently discovered the skeletal remains believed to be that of a Neolithic man.

UKM's Malay Civilisation and World Institute Deputy Director Prof Datuk Dr Nik Hasan Shuhaimi Nik Abdul Rahman said other ancient artifacts were also discovered during the three-month excavation work at the cave that began last November.

Among the fossils found were animal bones, goat horns, stone knives, stone hammer as well as 'Sumatralith' tools. Based on these discoveries, Dr Nik Hassan Shuhaimi is confident of the existence of pre-historic civilisation in the cave.

"More research has to be done as more information is needed to provide a more clearer picture on the historical artifacts for the benefit of tourists," he said.

EXCAVATION

Dr Nik Hasan Shuhaimi said his team of researchers had carried out 20 per cent of the excavation work at Gua Bewah.

"I believe more ancient artifacts will be discovered and all of the relics that we have found are kept in the State Museum. We have two more years to carry out the excavation," he said.

He also confirmed that most of the artifacts found came from the Mesolithic and Neolithic era.

"What separated the two eras, for an example is the stone axe. The stone axe that came from the Mesolithic era is crude but that from the Neolithic time exhibited signs of civilisation where the features are finer.

"Both eras had the spear used for hunting. The Neolithic man also in possession of earthern ware," he said.

According to the professor, all of therelics found in Gua Bewah will be documented in 2012.

The State Museum and Terengganu Chapter of the Malaysian Historical Society had carried excavation in July 1976 and among the objects discovered were human skeletal remains, porcelain, stone axe, animal bones and shells of snails.

FACILITIES, TRANSPORT

Visitors who wish to view the cave have to scale 240 stairs before reaching the cave's 'mouth'. They will be greeted by huge 'keladi' (caladium) and chili plants.

Gua Bewah is also equipped with a solar-powered lighting system for the benefit of tourists. The state authorities had also constructed a walkway and the visitors are welcome to bring along their torches as not all parts of the cave are lighted.

Those who are interested to view the cave can hire the services of a tour guide and take a houseboat made available by the Bahtera Petang Houseboat.

The Bahtera Petang Houseboat can accommodate a maximum of 12 people and for a two-day and one night package, the charge is RM280 while for three days/two nights, it is RM470.

Another RM188 is for an additional night.

The Bahtera Petang Houseboat has two rooms. One is with two single beds while in the other, there are two double-deckers. For the six others, they will be given bedding gear to spend the night at the lobby of the houseboat.

The houseboat service is available at Jenagor jetty or Pangkalan Gawi.

FEES

Each of the visitors will be charged RM1 for the entry into the National Park while a camera will be charged RM10. They are advised to obtain permission from the Terengganu Wildlife Protection and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) prior to making the visit.

"The permit to enter Taman Negara should be submitted at least one week before the date of entering the national park. For those who fail to declare their cameras, they will be compounded," State Perhilitan Director Jamalun Nasir Ibrahim said.

A HISTORICAL tourism-oriented city like Malacca needs to draw up new approaches to continuously attract tourists, said Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob.

In his opening address at the state assembly, Khalil said eco-tourism, homestay, health tourism and education tourism projects should be improved, besides creating new attractions.

He suggested the establishment of a residential complex based on ancient Malay warrior Hang Tuah.

He said the state government gave recognition to famous local personalities such as Hang Tuah only by naming streets, buildings or a mausoleum after them.

"Why not build a Hang Tuah residential complex to house their homes, hall, silat ground and homes of his friends and colleagues?

"We could use computer technology for this and the whole complex should not only depict Hang Tuah as a warrior but as a statesman, ambassador and a pioneer in traditional Malay martial arts.

"Hang Tuah could be turned into a icon for Malacca and placed on a par with international legends."

He also urged the state to promote traditional food such as buah Melaka (or onde-onde, which is made of glutinous rice flour and filled with palm sugar).

"Buah Melaka can be an international food and have a similar impact as what spaghetti and pizza are to Italy. Now people come here and all they know is ikan bakar."

On a similar note, he also called on the state to promote Pulau Besar as a major tourism destination in the region as the island was becoming increasingly popular among tourists.

"However, I would like to stress the importance of maintaining our greenery, cleanliness, proper pricing of goods and services, conservation of old buildings and places of worship, public transportation and providing quality tour guides."

Masimagam Hindu festival in Melaka is celebrated by the annual pilgrimage walk with the chariot procession from the oldest Hindu temple in the country, Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Moorthi Temple in Jalan Tukang Emas, to take part in a procession to the Arulmigu Sanasimalai Andavar Temple in Krubong.

The chariot procession starts in the early morning hours before making it's way through the streets and making stops along the way for offerings to Lord Murugan by the devotees.

It's been ages that Danok a small little Thai-Malaysia border town was open up to Malaysians intending to cross over into Thailand. The town located at the end of the E1 North South Expressway (NSE) in the northern part of the Malaysian Peninsular had benefitted much from the highway linking north to south while Malaysians wishing to go to Hatyai, do have an alternative which takes 45mins approximately by road from Danok.

What used to be a few lanes of Soi (street), this town had blossomed into a lively town and wonder if the people of Danok do really sleep. Night entertainment and spa/massage are abundance and littered on every street along the trunk road leading to Hatyai.

Almost all lanes/streets, have entertainment outlets that caters for Malaysians looking for Bangkok style entertainment within accessibility and no need to travel a distance further up north.

Every night with Thursday and Friday in particular, the town explodes into a celebration where almost all popular nightspots are jam packed with partygoers.

Not to be left out, the prices for food there are surprisingly cheap and would not burn a hole in one's pocket. Many Malaysians cross the border solely to look for bargains ranging from clothings (especially replica jerseys), pans, pots, foodstuff, etc.

Food in restaurants are not to be out done and are tasty in some outlets of which the outstanding restaurant I experienced was simply known as Waterview Restaurant.

Set by a lake which is surrounded by rubber plantation, "floating" attap-roof dining huts are set-up along the lakeside with diners having the option of dining with the traditional floor seating or with table and chairs. The view is not really breathtaking but it allows dining in a relaxed environment.

What is rather interesting is that the food orders are delivered by motorised boats from the kitchen which are located across the lake. Watching the boatmen manouvre the boats while delivering the dishes is another sight to behold.

Most of the food served there are Thai delicacies including the infamous Tom Yum with a southern taste which can be a little spicy for many. Service is fast although we may think that the delivery from kitchen is by boat while price are reasonable.

A souvenir shop located at the entrance offers all kinds of products but what really caught my eye was the RM150 giraffe coin box. I would leave up to your imagination how it looks like or better, make your way there.

This is not a restaurant to be missed if you are in Danok.

MALACCA: A campaign to promote an annual procession marking the Masimagam Hindu festival received an unexpected boost when Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam visited the Arulmigu Sanasimalai Andavar temple in Krubong on Sunday.

Mohd Ali said the Malacca government would gazette the 150-year-old Arulmigu Sanasimalai Andavar temple in Krubong as a historic monument.

"We will also propose that the Masimagam festival be listed in the state’s tourism calendar of events," he told reporters after visiting the temple and presenting mandarin oranges to devotees.

He said the state would contribute RM170,000 to the temple for repair and upgrading works.

More than 1,000 devotees gathered at about 5am at the country’s oldest Hindu temple, the 18th century Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Moorthi Temple in Jalan Tukang Emas, to take part in a procession to the Arulmigu Sanasimalai Andavar Temple in Krubong.

The highlight of the three-day festival was a 12km procession of a silver chariot bearing the statue of Lord Murugan.

Devotees carrying pots of milk or pal kudum to seek blessings and pay homage to the deity accompanied the chariot.

Over 50,000 Hindus took part in the festival that has become a tourist attraction.

Chap Goh Mei Chinese Temple Procession, Melaka

Chap Goh Mei, 15th day of the chinese lunar new year, marks the end of the celebrations and other then the mandarin oranges throwing, it also marks the whole day annual procession of Ong Yah Kong temple. The procession which starts from the chinese temple in Bandar Hilir would wind through the streets of Melaka town before ending at the temple in Kubu (the lane near the Jonker Walk stage) late in the evening.

Almost 3,000 to 5,000 devotees (could be more as the procession goes on) would be on foot with some taking turns carrying the chariots with the deities amidst the clanging of cymbals and drum beats.

Fire crackers are feature at each stop and the loud bangs would surely be ringing in your ears even after it ends, so be prepared for it.

Choy San (God of Prosperity) is not to be left out from the procession, distributing chocolates and sweets to devotees or anyone lining up the street witnessing the procession. For some lucky folks, ang pows containing 4-digit written on a red piece of paper are given out.

Hee Peah, Taman Asean, Melaka

A short trip to Melaka and it was such a hot day with everyone perspiring. We were driving around Taman Asean, Malim when we decided to have a "pit-stop" for drinks, Seremban siew pau and "4D". While everyone's busy in the shop, I decided to wander to the little van across shops which I had observed is attracting some customers which further arouse my curiosity.

There was a queue waiting to "Ta-pau" (pack) the nice looking hee-peah dish wish ranges from a mix of fishballs, fried prawn, yam and cucumber served with sauce.

The sauce seems to work wonders and blends well with the fishball and fried prawns.

The prawns though small is real crunchy which what I like, coming with that "crunching" sound when chewing.

The stream of customers never stops and many preferred to pack home instead of eating under the huge tree located beside the Jalan Malim trunk road leading to Alor Gajah.

We had ordered a small plate for 2 person, in case the taste works against our tastebuds but what we did was the opposite when we insisted on a second round of serving.

Not too sure if the constant tapping of the knife had actually made the hee-peah to taste better and no doubts finding the van if you do hear the knife tapping.

Even the doubter in our group extended his hands to reach for the tasty fish balls although small in size but nevertheless, the soft taste makes up for the newly discovery of Melaka food best kept secrets.

I would personally think that it's worth the wait and a bonus to us when the Arulmigu Sanasimalai Andavar temple in Krubong chariot procession passes by along with devotees carrying kavadi(s) while we were having the tasty hee-peah.

Intending to savour the taste? If you are coming from Melaka (along Lebuh AMJ) from Tesco, just head straight on towards Alor Gajah. Keep going straight as you reach the Taman Malim flyover and keep left. Once you pass the Pokok Mangga junction, Taman Asean will be on your left.

I love antiques and old items e.g. glass, bowls, plates, radios etc.

Being served in a glass which I am sure, older than I am is certainly worth my time to share while it lends a nostalgic feeling on every sip of the drink (whatever the drink is .... ;-) ).

This Red Lion drinking glass is a real gem and it was an honor being served drinks in that glass.

Red Lion during the 60s and 70s is a popular carbonated drink brand distributed by F&N and similar to the carbonated drinks we taste today except that it only comes in Orange flavor. Those were the days when we had Bireley's, Sinalco, Kickapoo ("The Original Joy Juice Recipe" )and many more houshold brand names.

Kickapoo still survived the taste of time in Malaysia while Sinalco is no longer here however, there are news of a revival is in the plans.

"What is the favorite food or must try local delicacy", is always the question on travels

Kemaman, is a fishing village town on the border between Terengganu and north of Cherating, Pahang. Many holiday makers staying in Cherating resorts would seek to make a quick dash to the quaint little town for a "food fix".

Not known to many, there are quite a couple of stalls and restaurants serving great tasty food in town of which Kemaman is synonymous to the stuff crab delicacy most visitors would be looking for.

However, not many would know of sata, otak-otak and pulut panggang stalls of Kuala Kemaman unless they ask the locals.

Sata are fish wrapped with banana leaves in conical shape and grilled. The banana leaves provide the sweet aroma to the tender fish meat once it's cooked.

Otak-otak unlike the Muar (Johor) version, slices of fish are marinated with spices and wrapped with palm leaf. The southern version would have minced fish meat and marinated with various spices but here, the little slices creates a want for more of the tasty snack.

Having both the above is not the end, there is also the keropok lekor which are made of minced fish meat and corn starch/sago and rolled in long tubes before being sliced in smaller length before frying. Here, you would taste the freshly made keropok lekor through the tender pieces and much better if dipped with a little of the specially made keropok lekor chilli sauce.

Well, the more popular stall is Pak Cik Wan and which you would have to be there early to ensure you have seats to taste the great tasty food.

If your stomach can still take in the food load, try the sotong goreng tepung and pulut panggang which also leaves you wanting more.

Didn't had enough?

There is a stall by the same people where you can buy keropok (prawn/fish crackers), lekor sauce, freshly made lekor (raw) and other sea food products for gift or tucking it into your stomach when you get home.

The best time to visit the restaurant would be in the early afternoon between 2:30-3:00pm which is before the crowd builds up till the closing time of approximately 6:00pm.

Ho Ann Kiong Temple, Kuala Terengganu

I had often regarded the 200 year old Ho Ann Kiong Temple as the showpiece of Kampung Cina (Chinatown), Kuala Terengganu. Being the oldest and largest temple of worship for the Chinese community in the state, it would be difficult for the rebuilding process given that the materials used are near non-existence and requires funding to restore to its original state.

Similar to the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple in Melaka, which was partially destroyed by fire previously, skillful craftsmen from China may be required to restore the temple back to it's original state.

KUALA TERENGGANU: Fire has destroyed large parts of an old Chinese Temple built in 1801 here.
Authorities say initial investigation does not point to arson.

The Ho Ann Kiong temple, built by the early Hokkien community and situated at the city’s Chinatown tourist belt, was the oldest structure here.

Almost 60% of the temple was ravaged in the 9.30pm fire on Monday.

State Fire and Rescue Department’s officer Mohamed Amin Mohamad Basir said the fire could have started in the middle of the temple.

He said three engines with 15 fire officers managed to douse the fire in about 25 minutes.

Mohamed Amin said preliminary investigation showed there was no arson or sabotage involved. The probe to determine the actual cause of the fire and the estimated loss was underway.

State assemblyman for Bandar, Toh Chin Yaw who was also at the scene said devotees were devastated by the incident.

He said the temple was the oldest and largest Chinese place of worship in the state.

"Billows of smoke were first sighted at about 9.30pm but those living nearby could not enter the temple to douse the fire at that time as the front entrance was locked and they had to make distress calls to the relevant rescue agencies," said Toh who is also the State MCA chief.

The temple’s building materials were brought in from China about 200 years ago.

"It not easy to rebuild the temple as some of the material inside was priceless and hard to be sourced now, even in China," he said.

Kuala Terengganu MP Mohd Abdul Wahid Endut who was also at the scene said he would contribute funds for the restoration of the temple.

"The temple is part of our heritage and history. It should be rebuilt at any cost," he said.

MALACCA: The music may stop for the Dondang Sayang if efforts are not undertaken to revive the traditional Malay music, indigenous to Malacca, among the younger generation.

Local Dondang Sayang personality Abas Katan, 63, said although the music had its own following, participation from the younger generation was not satisfactory.

Most of the Dondang Sayang performances in Malacca are held by veteran singers, he said in an interview here.

Dondang Sayang often features pantun (poetry) lyrics performed by singers in a lighthearted and sometimes humorous style.

It is not only performed by the Malays, but has been adopted as part of the Peranakan, Chetty and Portuguese-Malay culture.

It is believed to have been originated in Malacca during the times of the Malay Sultanate, especially during the reign of Sultan Mansur Shah.

The singers are usually accompanied by a violin, two Malay rebana (drums), a tetawak (gong), accordians, and often supplemented by other available instruments like the flute and tabla.

Abas, who is currently teaching Dondang Sayang in Taman Budaya Ayer Keroh here, said television and radio stations should be more active in promoting the music and art form, including introducing a reality show for enthusiasts.

In both federal and state government events, Dondang Sayang performances should be showcased, he said, adding that hotel and resort operators could also invite Dondang Sayang performers to entertain patrons.

Meanwhile, Nyonya Tan Abdullah, 60, a Dondang Sayang enthusiast of Peranakan descent, said the Malacca Dondang Sayang Association and the National Culture and Arts Department would be more active in organising workshops and other programmes to find new talents.

Once found, the new talents should be given the opportunity to sing in a stage show, along with veteran singers, said Nyonya Tan, who is also Malacca Dondang Sayang Association secretary and a trainer at Taman Budaya.

Friendly staff are readily available to assist but I guess you won't need them as Kemaman (sometimes referred as Chukai) town is between a couple of inter-connecting streets and there is absolutely no necessity for GPS to navigate.

Like any budget accommodation providers, rooms are limited and if you and your loved ones ever thought of a trip to the East Coast town of Kemaman for the great taste of nasi minyak, Hai Peng Kopitiam or stuff crab, Vista Hotel would be a great choice when all your needs are within walking distance.

The WiFi Zone signage with interchangeable colors hung in the little "internet room" equipped with 2 PCs for guest convenience.

The airwell in the hotel have been given a slight touch with wood being placed across which provides a nice lined shade during the daytime with ceiling fans to ensure you stay cool all the time. Anyway, who needs the fan or air-cond when the wind blowing from the sea/river opposite the hotel is sufficient to provide nice cool breeze.

Kota Bharu ("KB"), Islamic City, a city I last visited last January after a lapse of 26 years. Since that trip, I had made another 4 trips into this quaint and laid back lifestyle of the east coast folks. People in KB are accommodating and friendly smiles which would captivate any visitors coming into the city.

Budget accommodations are sprucing up all around KB and reflects the mood of general business activities there. With the known fact of accommodation of 3-5 star rating lacking in the city, a new player for value accommodation would certainly provide travellers an alternative.

No rates or fact files for now but travellers can rest be assured that it's your money's worth with facilities e.g. swimming pool, gym etc. available and yet easy on your pockets.

A 16th century masterpiece portrait painting which purportedly took 16 years (started in 1503) to complete by reknowned artist Leonardo Da Vinci became an iconic painting to people worldwide. The portrait of Mona Lisa (known as La Gocionda or La Joconde) is now being displayed in Louvre, Paris.

Mona Lisa is so famous that it is an instantly recognisable portrait globally and had been re-produce by many artists where some are now hung on walls in residentials.

It is a known fact that artists worldwide and Asia, in paticular, loves to have that half figure composition portrait painted over and over till I saw this particular version (on the right) which I am not too sure if Da Vinci would give his approval rating as a magnifique masterpiece.

Let's take these re-works with a little humor as the original Mona Lisa portrait had gone through theft, conservation, cleaning and touch-up before where it is today in a purpose built climate controlled enclosure, behind bullet proof glass panels which was valued at RM700million in 2009.

It has been sometime since I last watched a badminton finals live at the stadium and if recalled it right, it was during the Commonwealth Games held in Kuala Lumpur in 1998. Hence, it's 12 years and how time flies ...

I had decided all along that I would like to re-appear at the stadium to witness the matches again and it didn't take much coaxing from my son who loves badminton to make our way to Bukit Jalil Indoor Stadium to watch his idol Lee Chong Wei in action.

Never have I seen a ruthless display from Chong Wei after the break in the first match which he carried on into the 2nd match which left Boonsak spellbound and conceded defeat in straight sets which he later claimed that the local hero was just too fast and had really improved his game. However, we have to see Chong Wei winning tournaments where his nemesis Lin Dan plays as claimed by the Indonesian mens single ace Taufik Hidayat.

He had come to the stadium and would be satisfied just to watch chong wei, his idol. in action. Immediately after the chong wei's match was over, I had encouraged him to rush down with a camera in hand for a picture with his hero. That hope did not materialise but he managed a picture with the mentor of his idol, Datuk Misbun Hj Sidek. He had a smile beaming on his face all along after that and was even looking for more pictures with the other players from now on. This could perhaps spur him to work harder on his badminton training sessions armed with a hope that someday, the gentleman standing next to him would be his coach ... it all starts from a dream and an idol......

The crowd came equipped with banners bearing the initials of their local heroes and waiting patiently for the doubles final match involving Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong.

The doubles final match in progress and the Malaysian doubles pair had lived to their capabilities to win the finals which drove their coach Rexy Mainaky to tears later. Again, this pair had showed their true capabilities which had many times wasn't displayed which we hope this would be the turning point for the many more tournaments this year.

As seen from the monitors, it was just 15 minutes and 1st match over.

Kompleks Falak Al-Khawarizmi

I had turned down many invitations to visit Kompleks Falak Al-Khawarizmi, located in Tanjung Bidara, Masjid Tanah, Melaka before this. However, the impromptu call from the Manager prompted a quick "Yes" and was informed about the partial solar eclipse which would take place approximately at 3pm (1500hours).

Meetings had been arranged to ensure that I have sufficient time to travel there as well as enjoy the drive along the trunk roads with villages on both sides.

Arriving there, En Baharin, the Manager, was on hand to welcome me and this gentleman had not changed a single bit since I last met him about 2 years ago. He is every bit the humble and low profile individual I had known through the years as we exchange greetings.

As the clock ticks closer out came the viewing equipments and was surprised at how these electronically controlled gadgets had simplified the task of focusing and tracking the sun for viewing the solar eclipse.

The cloudy skies had threatened the viewing party and the intermittent ray of sun light gave us the much needed hope that we would not be dissapointed after placing so much effort. Excitement on everyone's faces filled the air in anticipation of watching the first solar eclipse in 2010 and the longest eclipse of the millennium.

The Maldives is the best spot for viewing the solar eclipse from land. The eclipse can be seen for 10.4 minutes in India.

When the first sight occurs, there were cheers among the crowd and everyone was rushing to train their cameras and mobile camera phones to capture the eclipse.

Sweat starts trickling down everyone due by the heat from the sun but that had not deter from many more public arriving to watch the eclipse which ends at 5:30pm (1730hours).

This visit had renewed my curiosity on astronomy while I had made a promised to my dear friend Baharin, that I shall return for a night viewing with my kids tagging along.

Was with a couple of friends for a meeting when one declared that we ought to give this rather striking pizza restaurant drenched in everything yellow a try since we would be hungry after the meeting. Before that we had all been secretly eyeing the pizzas from this outlet in Jalan Raja Abdullah and was wondering if the taste matches the prices and sizes.

We made pretty fast decision as to what we would having and the pizza was delivered in approximately 15 minutes to our table while we decided to dine al fresco amidst the slight drizzle.

The first bite truly answered the questions we had in mind and we all agreed that this is definitely one of the better tasting pizzas we ever had in Malaysia and rooting for more. It's easy to spot their delivery as they are all in yellow color painted similar to the yellow cabs of New York city while the pizzas are actually owned by Filipinos as we were duly informed by the attentive staff of the outlet.

It was less then 10 minutes when 3 of us finished the pizzas to a satisfied stomach!

My apologies that I did not include the picture of the pizza as we were all too hungry and not a single slice left off the pizza served in those typical delivery boxes.

Ushering in Year of the Tiger!

Lion dance and dragon dance to the Chinese community, is synonymous to grand occassions or events. It is not something that one can see daily.

When you are able to watch prancing lion dances accompanied by clanging of cymbals and beat of the drums in shopping centres, it is always an indication that the Chinese Lunar New Year is nearing or carried on throughout the 15 days celebration.

The Chinese community have started their busy shopping for new clothes, shoes to usher in the Year of the Tiger while shopping centres are equally busy running their events as a run-up to February 14,2010 which co-incidentally falls on Valentine's Day!

Florists had already predicted a lower flower sales and looks like the F&B outlets would be suffering as well during this year's Valentine's Day!

Shopping centres around Kuala Lumpur have started decorating with red lanterns and spring flowers to
Sogo was filled to the brim with the Members' Preview and Sale Event being held this weekend while
Jusco are also having their month long sales till 14 February 2010.

Parkson Grand Sungei Wang decided on an early start for the celebrations and with a difference. In line with the Year of the Tiger, the commonly found Lion Dance during the celebrations had been
replaced with the Tiger version.

It provides a welcome change and those whom had missed this need not worry as I was old thatmajority of the lion dance troupes around Malaysia had decided to don the tiger instead of theirusual lion head.

With the city exodus scheduled in 3 weeks, the city roads are jammed up where the police had to closed some roads within the shopping belt of Bukit Bintang with traffic coming from Jalan Hang Tuah being re-directed into Jalan Imbi.

The situation would seem to be worse next week while the spring cleaning of homes and giving the homes a new coat of paint have started as well.

Mambong MP is Tourism Ministry's new deputy

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Dr James Dawos Mamit, Member of Parliament for Mambong, will be sworn in as Deputy Tourism Minister on Jan 13, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.

The vacancy came about following the resignation of Datuk Seri Sulaiman Abdul Rahman Taib in November last year.

Sulaiman, 41, who is also PBB Youth vice-chief, was appointed to the post in March 2008 when Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was the Prime Minister.

He retained the portfolio when Najib took over in April last year, but quit in November citing health reasons.

World Best Hotels (at a budget)!

Budget accommodation does not necessarily relate to less than average service, facilities and guest experience while it's great to note that there are accommodations which are priced lower then the 4-5 star rated hotels while allowing the guest to enjoy great view, good food, excellent service and a memorable experience.

Hotels with a smaller room inventory are in fact at an advantageous position to provide the above as compared to the larger hotels which require extra funds to finance the larger staff force, maintenance and upkeep to service the guest as well as ensuring high occupancy.

It would be safe to say that one would be able to enjoy better personalised service in budget accommodations if the hotel owner and management do place priority in guest experience which would give the bigger boys a run for their money.

Hotel owner must be ready to change their business approach to upgrade the level of services and facilities to match many better budget accommodations around the world.
